Neil Young’s Dead Man Soundtrack Gets Official Reissue

I once traveled for two days from Windhoek to Swakopmund through the Kalahari Desert, on a train without air conditioning, sleeping at night on a hard leather bench that swung down from the ceiling. That journey seemed a little shorter than the one that opens “Dead Man,” the new film by Jim Jarmusch. In the mid- to late s, a man named William Blake Johnny Depp is traveling from Cleveland, where his parents have just died, to the Western town of Machine, where he has been promised a job.

He is dressed in a checked suit that looks as if it had been waiting a long time in the menswear store for a sucker to come along. The train drones through the endless prairie. There are shots of the inside of the train.

Neil Young is one of the most influential songwriters and guitarists of his known for recording such favorites as “Old Man,” “Harvest Moon” and “Heart of the sparse, moody soundtrack to Jim Jarmusch’s western Dead Man.

Back in January of , we published a post on the site titled 15 Record Store Releases That Should Exist , which included a number of out-of-print albums that I wanted to see finally get the vinyl reissue treatment, if not pressed to vinyl for the first time ever. With music by Neil Young, it was first released by Vapor Records back in February of , and has remained out-of-print ever since.

Although bootleg copies have appeared from time to time, there has never been another official pressing. The good news is that, based on new information, that should all be set to change incredibly soon. No, in full circle. And then I had my instruments inside the circle. So the instruments were always close enough for me to go from one to another, and they were all set up and the levels were all set, and everything was recording. So the film started, and I started playing the instruments.

So I watched the show—I watched the film go through, and I played all the way through live. I played the tack piano. And basically, it was all a real-time experience.

Separating the wheat from the chaff since Thanks Hounds That Howell! An old beautiful interview about Dead Man. Labels: dead man , film , jim jarmusch , neil young , year of the horse. He stands publicly against GMOs, climate-change deniers, deforestation, and so forth.

Neil Young, Canadian guitarist, singer, and songwriter best known for his Girl,” whose one-note guitar solo encapsulated Young’s sly sarcasm about and for whose film Dead Man () Young provided the guitar score.

This soundtrack to the Jim Jarmusch film Dead Man is entirely instrumental, with the exception of some poetry read by Johnny Depp who stars in the film and a bit of dialogue. What’s more, these untitled instrumental passages are dominated by subterranean guitar rumbles that manage to sound both grungy and subdued. Young also takes care to vary his approach a bit, switching occaionally to pump organ, detuned piano, and acoustic guitar.

The results not only evoke the hostile, desolate landscapes of the film’s Old West, but work on their own terms as ambient mood music for the non-new age crowd, creating an atmosphere of restless disturbance with subtlety and grace. It’s not necessarily for the typical Neil Young fan whoever that might be , but it’s certainly one of his most successful experimental efforts.

Neil Young

Navigating themes such as scarcity of sound in films, diagetics, native instrumentation and the early introduction of synthesizers we lift the hood on the film scores and the soundtracks that have inspired their works to date. I feel like this score is a bit of a blueprint for the current crop of dark TV show scores out there in regards to minimal tones and emotion.

As with all great scores, it really is integral to the film, which is outstanding on all fronts. Jarmusch claims that while he was writing the film he had the dream of Neil Young writing the score before he had even asked him. Down to earth and simple but drenched in a sense of premonitory doom. The film is excessively long and uneasy, and I think the odd incongruity between the score and visuals make the film much more interesting than it otherwise would have been.

Heck yes! This is an awesome movie with an even better score. Neil Young was shown the film in a dark room with no audio and played on his guitar creating.

Last month, Neil Young announced that a long-shelved project of his from the mids would see the light of day. That record might be more what people would rather hear from me now, but it was just a very down album. It was the darker side to Harvest. A lot of the songs had to do with me breaking up with my old lady. It was a little too personal. The album is set for release on June 19, and now Young has released another short preview of it.
