Grace’s Guide is the leading source of historical information on industry and manufacturing in Britain. This web publication contains , pages of information and , images on early companies, their products and the people who designed and built them. This was my first adult bike – it had been given to me by my uncle Ray – and was probably around four or five years old at that time but in good condition, and I well remember lovingly polishing it on the back yard of our terraced house.

I am gradually restoring the machine, and in surfing the net for information and spares, I have been struck by the high esteem with which the vintage models of the Phillips make are regarded. I have a lifelong interest in all forms of transport and am a keen motorcyclist; I hope that the following will be enjoyed by fellow enthusiasts.

This bike has a heartwarming history. After a few decades of being used and cherished, it was looking rather the worse for wear, though still a lovely machine. In the autumn , I was asked by his daughter what we could do with it to bring it back from the edge. The paint was in poor condition, with some pitting to the frame but no serious corrosion.

The wheels were knackered, the hubs worn out and the steel rims having lost quite alot of chrome. If it was to be worth rebuilding the bike, it would need new paint, so it was stripped of all parts and sent to a professional painters for a first class finish.

Dedicated to Pat, who sadly left us while we were away researching for this article. Drawn by no more than an old photograph that was presented in the November edition of The Raligram trade magazine, Volume 2, Number 6—we have a 50 year old mystery! Among the bikes on display, this picture showed what appears to be a Phillips Gadabout P 50 with three-speed Rex engine.

A casual glance at the image might arouse little attention from anyone unfamiliar with the Gadabout models, but this bike is like no other ever seen or previously known by anyone in Britain, since it features a sprung frame with swing-arm rear suspension, while the production P 50 Gadabout had a rigid frame! In July , the original two-speed Rex engine in the P 39 was succeeded by a two-speed Villiers 3K motor, and introduced as the new P 45 model.

What are we looking at? The steel frame is made from Reynolds tubing, brazed into fairly typical racing bike geometry. The seat tube is laid-back at a shallow angle, giving the rider good leverage to muscle around a heavy gear. This is a medium to large bike, and the size seems odd. In this era seatposts were not intended to extend very far beyond the frame, likewise the handlebar stem is just a few inches above the top tube. The saddle is a Brooks, handmade in England.

Campagnolo furnishes some of the equipment of course with their hubs, shifters, and Gran Sport derailleurs managing the ten gear choices. There is a close-ratio Stronglight Crankset on the bike, a sensible choice for flat roads, not requiring the front derailleur to perform heroics lifting the chain over a wide gear spread. The svelte little sidepull brakes are GB Coureur Plus models. The brakes, when paired with aluminum rims featuring an excellent braking surface , stop pretty well. This bike has remained in such nice condition that we recently tuned it up and sent it back out on the road for more adventures.

In we sent it back to the motherland, New York City, where our friend Eben Weiss rode and wrote about the bike for Outside magazine in what has to be one of the most overdue product reviews ever:.

Phillips was described at the time as a maker of bicycles and, crucially, branded a Phillips, in , although my earliest evidence dates from and is for.

I imported this Indian Scout from America a few years ago and have been riding it. But rather than pay a five figure sum for a motorized vintage Indian, I decided this unmotorized Indian Scout was an extremely practical option …not only much cheaper to buy and import, but also good exercise! They were essentially recreational machines.

But in Great Britain, saddled with repaying war debts to America, bicycles were just about the only form of transport available to the average person. Practicality was essential. There was a limited market in the USA for British bicycles. As part of the debt repayment, America became an important export destination for British cars, to some extent motorcycles, but particularly bicycles.

Their Christmas advert explains the advantages of a British bike:. An Indian 3-speed bike is the best Christmas present anyone could get. Beautifully made, 20 pounds lighter than balloon-tired bikes, and fitted with the Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub. Extra safe, too, with two-wheel brakes. New tyres and tubes were fitted when it was serviced this summer. Everything works fine.

Hello, I may have acquired the twin to this bicycle. Pretty darn good condition. I’ve been trying to date this bike, however, it has been very tricky. I love your restoration. Please keep comments on topic and civil. This appears to be a pre-war, early or mid s-era Phillips bicycle, owing to the mixture of chrome and nickel plated parts.

The bike was more or less complete, and still had its original paint, but was well-worn and faded. At this point, the bicycle is disassembled.

ALL Henry Sturmey was also editor of a cycling magazine and so ,from the beginning, Sturmey-Archer always saw the benefit of advertising. Many of the advertisements are no longer politically correct but reflect thinking at that time. Motor cycles were a booming industry in the early part of the 20th century and various types of engines and gearboxes were then produced. There was even a production unit in Germany and later, engines were supplied for lawn-mowers and small tractors.

to see if anyone can help me with identifying the year of my bike. Sturmey Archer ones always have dates and maybe some others too.

Her creativity is awesome and because of it a few unexpected adventures came on her path. That NZ was definitely the most challenging thing I have ever done, and what a feeling when I actually completed it with just a few hours to spare! Building a rocket, heart surgery, underwater hockey — bring it on. That said, the Africa cycle tour was the adventure that really changed my life — I went from being quite an ambitious but very insecure year-old to being a much more self-assured sort of person with a lot of faith in people and the world.

Pretty much! I loved cycling as a sport and travelling, but had never even heard of cycle-touring until shortly before that trip. I often say that adventure is an attitude, and every day I learn that a little bit more. I wish I could say that I did, but actually my parents were going to go cycle-touring just the two of them and my sister and I had to convince them to invite us along! Lots and lots and lots of rough days on adventures.
