The profusion of scholarship on the middle colonies in recent years has allowed a more nuanced look at the Dutch presence in North America, especially as it relates to religious toleration. These two books, and especially Evan Haefeli’s excellent study of New Netherland, offers an occasion to reconsider the Dutch legacy in the New World.
Haefeli argues that the Dutch tradition of toleration, as inscribed in the Union of Utrecht, should be seen less as an abstract justification for religious tolerance than as a brief for liberty of conscience.
