Christian is sociable, handsome, with his own hair, and has been rejected by The Undateables twice. M y brother wants a girlfriend. He writes it on his Facebook wall and texts me most weeks to tell me this. Can you help find me a girlfriend? Christian is a catch. He lives on the seafront in Brighton and can deliver a commentary on Love Island better than any media person I know.
He has asked me to find him a dating site and set him up with a profile, which sounds simple enough — but the reality is different. Christian has a learning disability. As an adult who lives alone, who has no need for a care worker and enjoys a busy social life, Christian falls into a difficult gap in the dating scene.
I watched the first episode of the new Undataebles series last week. As some one with a learning disability, I felt it really showed a positive image of people with a disability in their hunt to find love and relationships. I really want to praise Channel 4 for showing the new series. As someone with a learning disability, I think that people with a learning disability have a right to able to go out on dates, meet partners and to have relationships.
Often, on TV, people with a learning disability are shown in a certain way. I think having real people with disabilities dealing with real life issues proves those are just wrong.
The Undateables is a British TV documentary series that follows a range of people on dates who have long term conditions, including: disabilities , developmental disorders , and learning difficulties. There have been 53 episodes since the documentary first aired on 3 April , split into eleven separate series and a few additional episodes. The documentary has been narrated by Sally Phillips throughout.
There was a lot of controversy surrounding this show when it was first introduced from newspaper companies such as The Mirror and The Guardian , due to the word ‘undateable’ being used in the title to describe people with mental and physical disabilities. However, Channel 4 claim the title of the series was based upon Society’s preconceptions.

Tuesday’s December 17 special festive edition of The Undateables delivered a real Christmas miracle on Channel 4. The Undateables at Christmas saw the return of fan-favourite singleton Richard Lawrence, who hates Christmas but decided to make a special effort this year. Along with volunteering at an elderly charity, Richard’s other big change was deciding to break his biggest dating rule.
Yes, in an effort to find love for Christmas, Richard opted to increase his dating radius from five miles to eight miles. That’s a whole three extra miles! Viewers couldn’t believe that Richard was willing to make the change, and they appreciated his use of a map and compass. The iconic moment the official 5 mile radius was lifted to 8 miles. People told me I would never find love, and no romantic partner would accept everything that comes along with my disability. I refused to believe them, and it worked — just ask my partner. Finding a partner can be difficult for anyone, but for people with disabilities, there are extra barriers in place. Many believe the biggest barriers stem from society’s often-skewed views of our capabilities and what it means to be disabled.
Many are shocked to learn that people with disabilities have active social lives and romantic relationships, including sexual ones — gasp! There are limited resources for people with disabilities when it comes to dating and relationships, including sexual and reproductive health. To me, it’s glaringly problematic that supports for us are absent, or buried under paperwork and abandoned websites.

Outsiders is a social, peer support and dating club, run by and for socially and physically disabled people. Our members have a wide range of impairments, including visual and hearing impairment. They tell us only other disabled people really understand them, so make the best partners. All new members are vetted by experienced volunteers. We are thus very different to other dating sites and all profiles are genuine.
We are a run as a respectful and very personal international private club. Members enjoy peer support, friendship and romance, and many find love. We have a large, safe private Facebook Clubhouse which enjoys lively discussions and private communication. We have many Group Chats on the go, which provide both peer support and a chance for members to decide how and when they would like to meet up locally.
Our local lunches are warm and friendly, where everybody is introduced to one another and has fun: there are lively group discussions, whilst others spend their time getting to know one another. Outsiders runs the School of Sex for Disabled People so that people with disabilities can better enjoy their own bodies and sex with partners. Most of our volunteers and Trustees are disabled.

Written by Beatriz Liberatti on March 4 Tobi Green-Adenowo, 26, who suffers from brittle bone disease, went on the show for a chance at dating but left with the dream of changing how disabled people of colour are represented in the media. One of the things I like about The Undateables, despite the name, is that it gives disabled people a space to fit in within media and make it what they want. After meeting up with a dating agency, Green was matched with Melvin, a retail assistant from West London.
Even though the experience was overwhelmingly positive, Green was unable to find love in The Undateables. Her bubbly personality did catch the eye of a few suitors, who have been sliding into her DMs since the show.
Hayley Ostler, 29, runs a project where she plays Cupid to those who need a little help in the romance department…. Sitting on the edge of the sofa, I watched the young couple on TV. As they ate ice cream and made nervous small talk, I rooted for them. And when they later swapped numbers and kissed goodbye, I beamed with pride.
As a matchmaker for people with learning disabilities, I regularly help would-be boyfriends and girlfriends, like Luke and Alice, find love. That episode showed me phoning Luke, a member of the dating project I run, to suggest a date with Alice, also a member. After I showed them to their table, then sat at the other end of the restaurant in case they needed me, there were a few awkward silences. They just clicked. The fact he had a disability was never an issue to me.
I started off volunteering for the dating project eight years ago. I loved it from day one. At first, I helped the members put on shows. Social events are a big part of how the project is run — they help members get to know one another before going on dates.
